A trip to see Thomas

Luke and Olivia got a little Thomas the train set for Christmas. And so began their love for Thomas! We saw that Thomas was coming to Tweetsie Railroad for 2 weekends, so we decided to go on a one day road trip. Some of our friends joined us as well. We met Stacy, Ian, their little boy Sean and Heidi, Brad and little Ethan for lunch and a 1pm Thomas train ride.
We left around 8:30am in the hopes of arriving mid morning so we could check out the attractions. We made it just in time for an interactive show in which Olivia wasted no time getting up on stage. She loves people dressed up in costume. Luke was content to sit with us in the audience. After the show was over, we headed off to feed the animals and walk around for a little bit. Around noon, we met up with our friends for a pizza lunch. By then, it was time for our 1:00pm appointment to see Thomas.
Luke and Olivia were super excited to see “Big Thomas” and couldn’t wait to get on board. We found our seats and got comfy. Thomas said “choo choo” and we were off. About half way through the train ride, there was a cowboy show in which Thomas saved the day. After riding some more, it was time to pull into the train station. The train ride was great, except for the fact that ash and soot were coming off of the tracks and into our faces and eyes. Luke and Olivia had to put on our sunglasses so they didn’t get it in their eyes.
After the train ride, we went to the upper section of Tweetsie to check out the rides. Immediately Luke and Olivia wanted to ride the carousel. And then they wanted to ride it again. And then again. We probably rode it 5 or 6 times before venturing onto other rides. Olivia always wanted to ride the same pink horse and Luke rode the blue horse next to her. They also rode this cool little helicopter/airplane ride that parents could not ride on. They looked so grown up riding their first ride all by themselves! Luke chose the blue helicopter while Olivia picked a red airplane. They rode this ride a couple of times as well. Dan wanted to take them onto the ferris wheel, but I was just a little too nervous. For some reason I have never trusted those things!
By this time it was mid-afternoon and we were getting pretty hot. We decided to venture indoors to Imagination Station, where they could play with trains, color pictures, and see a show. It was a perfect time for them to cool down a little before heading outside again to “drive” the cars. We met up with our friends once again for a lap around the area. Dan rode with Luke and I rode with Olivia. They got to “steer” the car while the parents pushed the gas.
Our day wouldn’t be complete without venturing into the tourist trap gift shops! We got them a Thomas Whistle and new book and then made a visit to the Fudge Factory where they became proud owners of airplane suckers. We also got some yummy fudge for the ride home!
After a few more trips around on the carousel, it was time to leave. The park closed at 6pm and we stayed until then. Our plan was to have dinner with our friends on the way home, but there were 14 of us total and we thought it would be hard to find a table for everyone. So Heidi, Brad and Ethan headed for home and we headed to Outback with Stacy, Ian and Sean. By the time we got a table and got food, we didn’t leave until a little after 9pm. With no naps all day, Luke and Olivia were ready put on their pjs and get in their car seats so they could sleep! We got home around 10:45pm and Luke and Olivia fell fast asleep in their beds. They were such troopers all day!
It was such a fun day, and we’ll have the memories forever. It’s awesome to be able to do these things with them and share new experiences.

Happy Half Birthday!!!

Wow! June 1st. Half of the year is behind us and our twinnies turn 2 1/2 today! I remember hitting this milestone when they were 6 months old and 18 months old. Now we are at a point where we tell their age in years and not months. It's the little things...

This is a good time to remember some of the things they are doing now. Man, are they busy!!! If only we could bottle up all of their energy and release it each day around 3pm, then we wouldn't need caffeine in our lives! Where to begin?

Let's start with a typical day, which starts for us around 6:30am. Dan and I get ready for the day and then we get Luke and Olivia out of bed around 7:15am. We do diaper changes and have a little playtime before Daddy leaves for work around 7:45am. We usually play for a little longer until they tell me they are ready for breakfast. They used to wake up and eat right away, but now they would rather play. It shows us their stomachs are developing away from being babies as their food sustains them for longer. We eat breakfast together and they play a little more while I clean up. Then it's time to brush teeth and get dressed for the day. Olivia will watch her favorite show, Word World, while Luke plays. He still doesn't have much attention span for TV, but sometimes he'll watch from time to time. Around mid-morning, we head out for the day. Sometimes we go to Discovery Place Kids, the library, the playground, or play dates with friends. Now that it's warmer, we also go to the pool or play at the edge of the lake. We have LOTS of picnics and it's one of my favorite things to do with them. We are usually home between noon and 1:30pm and play some more until nap time.

Ah, sleeping. They are sleeping champs now and we couldn't be happier. They have a really good schedule and are pretty predictable. They wake up around 6:30-6:45am each morning but (thankfully) play in their crib until about 7:15am. That gives Dan and I time to get ready each morning. They nap between 2:30pm and 3pm and wake up around 4:30-5pm. Luke would probably nap a little earlier but I try to have their nap time overlap as much as possible. Usually Luke falls asleep first and wakes first while Olivia takes longer to fall asleep. Luke is almost always out of bed first and he wants to get Olivia immediately. It's really sweet, except sometimes Olivia is still asleep. He is really sad when he can't play with her as soon as she wakes up, but I'm glad to have some time with just him. They are still in their cribs for now, and we are hoping to keep them there as long as possible! It's a miracle they haven't climbed out yet (Luke did only 1 time) but we will take it as long as we can. We fear that once they get into their toddler beds, they may give up napping-especially Olivia. She is SUCH a busy little girl and her toys in her room would provide the perfect distraction to avoid napping. They don't seem to mind their "quiet time", though, and we hope to continue that even once they give up napping.

Eating. Whew, that can be a challenge. When they were first starting out on solid foods, they were great eaters. They would eat pretty much anything I made, including vegetables. Now they have an opinion and it means they want nothing to do with veggies, even corn or carrots. It's so frustrating at times! We want them to eat a well balanced diet, but Luke refuses to try anything new. He also doesn't like anything green, and once turned down a popsicle for being green! He has recently started eating green grapes though so hopefully this veggie strike is a phase they pass through quickly. Olivia is more open to trying things but if there is something on her plate she doesn't like, she wants it removed! I sincerely hope they become more open to foods soon as it's tiring fixing them the same ol thing. We keep trying, though, and keep introducing them to new foods frequently.

Oh, potty training. I wish I could just skip this topic all together! We are working on potty training, but they have regressed a little. Now Luke won't sit on the potty, whereas before he was. Olivia has peed one time and won't sit again. I feel like she is ready but I don't want to pressure her too much. We talked about the doing the "weekend warrior" routine but it just didn't work for us. I know they will get there when they are ready and we try every day. I read 2 great books and they have helped, but it takes time and patience.

Dan's brother once said "don't teach your kids to walk and talk because they will never sit down or be quiet." Boy, is there some truth to that! Olivia talks ALL of the time, even while she's eating and usually while she falls asleep. Luke was slower to talk, but he is great with words and sentences now and talks quite a bit, too. It's so cool to have a conversation with them and talk about their day. I sometimes ask them what they want to do each day (when given two choices) and they let me know what they feel up to. And man, are they ever on the go. They play all over the house, but can have an amazingly long attention span when they become focused on something. I really have never seen anything like it and it's longer than any other toddler I have been around. Sometimes Luke will work at his tool bench and Olivia at her kitchen for upwards of 20-30 minutes at a time, or they will work on puzzle after puzzle and never seem to get bored. I hope they keep this kind of focus once school starts.

Luke and Olivia's language has just exploded into complete thoughts and sentences. Luke calls me "mommy or momma" and Dan "daddy." Olivia has taken to calling me "monee" (sounds like mah-knee) and Dan is "daddy" as well. Luke calls Olivia "Yee Yee" and Olivia calls Luke "Luke-ee." They talk about colors, count, sing, read books and just generally talk about what they are doing. For example, I will be folding clothes and Luke will say "that's daddy's shirt, those are mommy's socks, that's YeeYee's skirt." Olivia provides lots of commentary as well and will say the same thing over and over again until you repeat it back to her. I often wonder if she does it to see if we are listening or to see if we understand. I don't know why, but it's still super cool to me to have a conversation with them. I guess because just 6 short months ago or so it was fragmented words and thoughts and it's changed so quickly.

People say to me all of the time "it must be nice to have twins because you have a built in playmate." Well, yes and no! There are definitely times where they love to play together. "Tackling" each other is one of their favorite things to do, as well as chasing each other. Surprisingly, they seem to find most of their energy right before bath time and LOVE to play in Olivia's room before we do the bath/bed routine. Dan and I sit in the middle of the floor and they literally run circles around us. Or we play around on the ground together and "fly" on our legs. But there are also times when they want the same toy at the same time, even when there are a million other toys to choose from. They have spent their entire life sharing and we understand that this is hard at times. Sometimes adults aren't the best sharers, either! Distraction used to work great, but now they are older and are on to our tricks!

They have formed some great friendships with some of the kids in our neighborhood. Lilah and Sean are their best little buddies, and we will see Tyler more during the summertime. They also love Grant, Ethan, Sophie and other neighborhood kids, too. It's great, too, because we like all of their parents so play dates are great! They also love their younger friends, too (Milo and Sofia to name a few) and look forward to them getting a little older so they can join us on our adventures. It's so funny to watch them interact with one another and negotiate for "toy time." They have their own little language and are genuinely excited to see one another.

Do Luke and Olivia love to sing! We have kids music in the car and Olivia can hear the first few notes of a song and know what the song will be. We must listen to "the wheels on the bus" or "twinkle twinkle little star" several times in a row. Funny thing is, she doesn't like it when I sing along. She says "no, monee. I sing it by myself." Luke loves to sing as well and has been know to break into a rendition of "take me out to the ballgame." Ring around the rosie is another all time favorite as is "row row row your boat."

As much as they've grown and changed since they were born, I still have to remind myself they are only 2 1/2 years old. Their little minds and bodies are still developing and they can't comprehend things the way adults do. Sometimes I get frustrated when they don't listen and I have to take a step back and remember to see the world from the way they do. It's nice to get down on their level and see exactly what they are seeing. It helps Dan and I understand that while we are pretty much telling them what to eat, when to sleep, etc they are starting to find their autonomy and it's good for them to express their thoughts and emotions. Them being able to do that will lead to their total independence one day (oh how the thought of them no longer needing us as much as they do makes me cry!). Dan and I are striving to build their solid foundation and then trust that that we have done the best job possible. Now I let them have more choices in the clothes they wear, the shoes they wear, etc and oh, to see the excitement on their precious faces when they put their shoes on by themselves. It sometimes feels like it takes forever to get out of the door, but taking the time to let them do things by themselves is necessary.

Luke and Olivia impress and amaze me everyday. They truly are remarkable children and I am humbled to be their mommy. They are kind, smart, generous and overall pretty happy little toddlers. Dan asked me the other day "when do we stop calling them our babies and start calling them children or kids." I told him never!!!

Here are a few pics I took recently. So hard to believe they are 30 months old. We love you!!!

Pet Turtle for the day

Dan was leaving for work one morning and there was a turtle at the end of the driveway. He came to the front door and said "want a pet for the day?" Sure, why not?

So I grabbed a box and a few pine needles and made a home for Turtle (that's what Luke and Olivia named him. Clever, huh?). Then we "fed" him some carrots and spinach (no bugs for him today) and got him some water. Turtle stayed inside his shell for about 45 minutes, long enough for us to eat breakfast and get dressed. Then he got brave and stuck his head out. Eventually his legs came out, too, and he started walking around. Luke thought it was the coolest thing and of course Olivia wanted to pet him. I swear, that little girl has no fear!

Turtle stayed in his box most of the day and we would check in on him from time to time. One time Olivia was walking past the box and she looked inside and said "what's up, Turtle?" I laughed and laughed. Where do they get this stuff??? Luke couldn't get enough of the Turtle walking around and would watch him for long periods of time. He really wanted to see Turtle eat, but Turtle didn't seem to care for his choices.

When we got home from Princess/Prince night at Chick Fil A, it was time for the turtle to go home-outside! We let them play with Turtle in the driveway for a little bit before sending him home into the woods. We took Turtle to the area where we feed the deer and put him down out there to find his way home. Luke and Olivia told him bye bye and Luke even waved to him as we walked away. Too cute! It was fun to have a Turtle for the day, but I think we'll stick to Piper and Blueberry the fish for the long term.

Mother's Day and a Fever

Mother's Day was the day after we went to the Knight's Game. We got home about 11:30pm Saturday night and Luke woke up around 12:45am burning up with a 103 degree fever. I immediately felt horrible and thought we had kept him out too late at the game. We game him some ibuprophen and put a cool rag on his head and neck to bring his fever down. We checked on him throughout the night and he had a fever most of the time. We soon realized he wasn't just overtired but he had a virus or something. Our poor lil man :( As a parent, you feel so helpless when your child is hurting and you would do anything to take the pain on yourself. He woke up in the morning after a restless night of sleep and still had a fever. We knew some of our friend's children had bouts of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) and were starting to wonder if that was what Luke had.

We decided not to go to church but to stay home and just spend some time together. Luke didn't really feel like doing too much and was understandably pretty clingy. Dan was sweet to make dinner for me, but Luke was still not feeling well and wanted nothing of it. So dinner only lasted about 5 minutes. I appreciated the effort, though! Even though it wasn't the Mother's Day I had envisioned, it was a good reminder that I am blessed with two precious children and an amazing husband. I'm glad we were able to spend so much time together as a family, although my heart was sad that Luke felt so terrible.

Monday morning Luke woke up with the tell tale signs of HFMD with bumps first appearing on his arms then his legs and booty. Thankfully he only got one or two around his mouth so he was able to drink fluids pretty easily. We decided not to take him to the doctor since there is nothing than can do anyway. It's just a nasty, highly contagious virus that requires ibuprophen and lots of fluids and rest. I tried very hard to keep Olivia away as much as possible, but it's pretty inevitable that she will be exposed. Believe it or not, she never really showed signs or symptoms and has seemed to have avoided it, at least for the time being. By Wednesday, Luke was finally starting to feel better and by Thursday we were ready to come out of solitary confinement and rejoin the world of the living!

Birthday at the Knights Game

A group of us went to the Knights game to celebrate two birthdays: Dan's and our friends Ian's. Dan's folks came, too, along with our new neighbors across the street. We haven't been to a game since last year, but it's always so much fun to take them and see the game through their eyes. They were mesmerized by the crowds, the field and most of all, the food! They had their first corn dog and devoured their favorite thing...french fries (kids after my own heart for sure!). They were content to sit for about 3 minutes, and then they wanted to walk around for a bit to check out the stadium. Luckily we were sitting in a section where they could wander around for a bit, and there was enough of us in the group that we could block off a section for the kids. Overall, they did amazingly well and were troopers until the end of the game.

They were having fireworks after the game, but we had planned on leaving before then so Luke and Olivia and could go to bed. We didn't think they would make it until 10:30pm. As comes with parenthood, they surprised us yet again and made it until then, although poor little Luke could barely keep his eyes open. He fell asleep as soon as his pjs were on and he was in his carseat. Olivia absolutely loved the fireworks and would tell me "mommy, that's a BIG one. mommy, that's a red one, a blue one" and on and on. Fireworks with commentary...loved it!

I think we will definitely check out more games this year, although we may wait until later in the season and it's a little cooler. Thank goodness for night games!

Riverbanks Zoo

Dan and I had planned to take Luke and Olivia to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC for the first time last fall, but time got away from us and we never made it. So we made a plan to take them sometime during the spring before it got too hot. We also wanted to go during the week in the hopes it wouldn't be too crowded. We had planned to go last Tuesday, but there was a mini heat wave and the 95 degree weather deterred us.

We decided to go to to the Riverbanks Zoo instead of the one in Asheboro, NC because this one is slightly smaller and more manageable for 2 two year olds. We'll save the other zoo for the fall when they are a little older. We finally made it on Tuesday and it was an absolutely perfect day! Dan and I truly enjoyed ourselves and Luke and Olivia couldn't get enough of the animals. Olivia LOVED the flamingos (as she called them: mingos) and Luke LOVED the giraffes. We must have circled back to see each animal no less than 5 times each! We also saw lions, a grizzly bear, reptiles, zebras, koala bears, kangaroos, elephants, monkeys, and lots of other zoo animals.

We left about 8:30am, arrived at the zoo around 10am and stopped for lunch around 1pm. By then, we had seen almost everything, so we circled back to their favorite things. Then we made the "mistake" of going to the gift shop. We saw 2 little stuffed flamingos and giraffes and thought that would be a fun momento from their first zoo trip. Well, then they saw the "big" mingo and giraffe and those became their new forever friends. It only took about 5 minutes of driving before Luke was fast asleep, and Olivia was not far behind. We got home a little after 4pm. It was a perfect day trip outing.

They are still talking about the zoo and it's so fun to see their excitement. We will definitely go back and look forward to many more family day trips!

Happy Birthdays!

Recently Dan and I celebrated our 35th birthdays. Mine was on April 14 and Dan's was on May 5th. I just realized this year that all of our birthdays (Luke and Olivia included) fall on the same day of the week. This year, all of our birthdays fall on a Saturday. Yahoo!

For my birthday, Dan arranged to have a cookout at our friends house. Several of our very good friends were able to join us and it was so much fun to see all of the kids playing together. Dan also got me my very first "professional" camera. I've been shooting with a Nikon D5000, and soon (it's still on backorder) I will have a new Nikon 800. I CANNOT wait to get it!!! This camera will give me a lot more versatility and now I have a second camera for weddings so I don't have to switch lenses. Now I just hope my business continues to grow!

For Dan's birthday, he played golf last Sunday with a good friend of his and we are going to a Knights game this Saturday night with a group of friends. We also went to dinner on Cinco de Mayo (his actual birthday) with the kiddos at Taco Mac and some other friends. Luke and Olivia actually do really well when we go out to dinner and they will sit in their highchairs for upwards of 45 minutes. We are very thankful because we have lots of friends that aren't so lucky. They love to "people watch" and talk with everyone.

On April 28th, my mom babysat and we had a much needed date night at PF Changs. It was prom night and so fun to see all of the teenagers all dressed up. Boy, did that bring back memories! It was so nice to enjoy a meal at our own pace :)

It's hard to believe we are already in our mid-thirties, but life is exactly as we had hoped it would be. Beautiful family, beautiful marriage, beautiful house and great careers. We couldn't ask for anything more!
